Eight little horses,
straight out of Swedish folk art.

The Dala horse – the painted wooden horse from Dalarna that became Sweden’s unofficial mascot – in eight colors, with kurbits flowers printed on both sides and a hole through the back for hanging. Small enough to tuck between the lights, bright enough to be the thing people ask about.

Allyix set of 8 Swedish Dala horse Christmas ornaments in red, green, white, dark blue, orange, black, light blue and light pink hanging on a lit Christmas tree

✦  Meet the eight  ✦

One horse, eight coats.

The classic Dala red plus seven more – so the set works on a traditional red-and-green tree and on a pastel or all-white one.

Every horse wears the same kurbits pattern – saddle, harness and the curling gourd-vine flowers – so the eight read as a family, not eight strangers.

✦  A short history  ✦

Why a horse, and why Dalarna?

Three things worth knowing before you hang one – good for the inevitable “what are those?” at the party.

Close-up of the eight painted Dala horse ornaments hanging among red baubles and lights on the Christmas tree
Dalahäst
Born in the woods of Dalarna
Swedish woodcutters around Mora carved little horses for their children in the long winter evenings, centuries ago. Painting them came later – and stuck.
Kurbits
The flowers aren’t random
Kurbits is the Dalarna folk-painting style: swirling, oversized gourd-vine blossoms. On a Dala horse it becomes the saddle and harness – the same shapes you see here.
1939
New York made it famous
A giant Dala horse stood outside the Swedish pavilion at the 1939 World’s Fair in New York. It went home a national symbol – and the red horse has been Sweden’s souvenir ever since.

✦  Made to hang  ✦

Details that matter on the tree.

🔁
Printed on both sides
Ornaments spin. Both faces carry the full pattern, so the horse never turns its blank back to the room.
🪵
Flat-cut wood, 0.47 in thick
Light enough for the tips of thin branches, with enough body to hang flat instead of fluttering.
🕳️
Hole through the back
Pre-drilled on the back, where a saddle would sit, so the horse hangs upright. Hanging cords included, thread your own
📏
3.15 in – bauble-sized
About the size of a standard glass ball, so it mixes with the ornaments you already own instead of shouting over them.
🎨
Crisp printed artwork
Fine kurbits detail, printed rather than hand-painted – so all eight match, and the pattern survives the annual trip in and out of the box.
🌿
Unscented, clean finish
No fragrance, no glitter to shed, nothing sticky. Wipe with a dry cloth and put them away for next year.

✦  Eight horses, eight ideas  ✦

Where they go.

The whole set on the tree is the obvious answer. It isn’t the only one.

Dala horse ornaments styled three ways – on a rustic shelf display, along a mantel garland, and wired into a Christmas wreath
1Scattered through the tree
One color per ‘slice’ of the tree, mid-branch and facing out. Eight horses cover a 6–7 ft tree as accents.
2Three in the wreath
Wire red, white and dark blue into a plain evergreen wreath at ten, two and six o’clock. Save the rest for the tree.
3Strung as a garland
Thread all eight on one length of jute or red ribbon, a hand-width apart – mantel, banister, bookshelf edge.
4In the window
Hang them on a rod or a tension wire at different heights; two-sided printing means the street sees a horse too.
5On the gifts
Tie one to each parcel in place of a bow – eight gifts, eight ornaments the recipients keep.
6Place cards for the table
One horse per setting on the Christmas Eve table; guests take theirs home.

✦  How many sets?  ✦

Eight goes a long way – but here’s the math.

Your displaySetsNotes
Tree 6–7.5 ft, horses as accents1 setEight horses spread through a tree already dressed with baubles and lights.
Tree 6–7.5 ft, Scandi theme (horses, straw stars, hearts)2 setsSixteen horses – roughly two per branch tier – read as a theme rather than a hint.
Tabletop or 4 ft tree1 setEight is plenty; a few left for the wreath or gifts.
Wreath or door swag3–4 horsesWire them in; the rest go on the tree.
Mantel or banister garland, 6 ft1 setEight horses a hand-width apart on a cord.
Gift toppers or place cards1 horse eachOne set dresses eight gifts or an eight-seat table.
One of each
Colors come one of each – you can’t order a set of eight reds. If you want a single-color look, plan on two or three sets and split them by color between tree, wreath and gifts.

✦  Who it’s for  ✦

A small gift with a story attached.

At under two dollars a horse it’s the rare gift that’s both thoughtful and cheap enough to give eight times.

✦  Care & storage  ✦

Wood likes it dry.

Christmas tree in a living room decorated with red baubles and the eight colorful Dala horse ornaments
  • ✓Dust with a dry or barely damp cloth. Don’t soak – water lifts printed finishes on wood.
  • ✓Indoors only. Rain, frost and direct sun will fade the print and warp the wood.
  • ✓Away from flame and hot bulbs. Wood and cord – use LED lights on the tree.
  • ✓Décor, not a toy. Made for adults to hang; keep out of reach of children under 3 and of dogs who like to chew.
  • ✓Store flat. Back in the box or wrapped in tissue, in a dry closet – not a damp basement or hot attic.
  • ✓Cords fray, horses don’t. If a hanging loop wears out, thread any twine, ribbon or ornament hook through the hole.

✦  Questions  ✦

Asked before adding to cart

Are they hand-painted?

No – the kurbits artwork is printed onto the wood, on both sides. That’s why all eight match perfectly and why the price is what it is; hand-painted Dala horses from Sweden run many times more per horse. If you’re after an heirloom carving, this isn’t it. If you want eight crisp, matching horses for the tree, it is.

How big are they, really?

3.15 in tall and 3.15 in nose to tail – about 8 cm, the size of a standard glass bauble – and 0.47 in (1.2 cm) thick. Big enough to see the pattern from across the room, small enough not to dominate a normal tree.

Are both sides the same?

Both sides carry the full artwork, so the horse looks finished whichever way it spins.

Can they stand up on a shelf?

They’re made to hang – that’s what the hole is for.

Can I get eight of the same color?

The set is one of each of the eight colors. For a single-color scheme, buy two or three sets and split them between the tree, the wreath and the gift pile.

Are they safe around kids and pets?

They’re décor for adults to hang, not toys. Hang them above toddler reach and keep them from dogs that chew – wood, print and cord.

Are they real Swedish Dala horses?

They’re Swedish-style ornaments inspired by the traditional Dalarna horse and its kurbits painting – not carved in Sweden. Think of them as the affordable eight-pack that lets you put the whole tradition on the tree.
